چکیده
We provide constant ratio approximation algorithms for two NP-hard problems, the rectangle stabbing problem and the rectilinear partitioning problem. In the rectangle stabbing problem, we are given a set of rectangles in two-dimensional space, with the objective of stabbing all rectangles with the minimum number of lines parallel to the x and y axes. We provide a 2-approximation algorithm, while the best known approximation ratio for this problem is O log n . This algorithm is then extended to a 4-approximation algorithm for the rectilinear partitioning problem, which, given an mx ×my array of nonnegative integers and positive integers v h, asks to find a set of v vertical and h horizontal lines such that the maximum load of a subrectangle (i.e., the sum of the numbers in it) is minimized. The best known approximation ratio for this problem is 27. Our approximation ratio 4 is close to the best possible, as it is known to be NP-hard to approximate within any factor less than 2. The results are then extended to the d-dimensional space for d ≥ 2, where a

Computing Partitions of Rectilinear Polygons with Minimum Stabbing Number
The stabbing number of a partition of a rectilinear polygon P into rectangles is the maximum number of rectangles stabbed by any axis-parallel line segment contained in P . We consider the problem of finding a rectangular partition with minimum stabbing number for a given rectilinear polygon P . First, we impose a conforming constraint on partitions: every vertex of every rectangle in the parti...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms for Rectangle Stabbing and Interval Stabbing Problems
In the weighted rectangle stabbing problem we are given a grid in ]R2 consisting of columns and rows each having a positive integral weight, and a set of closed axis-parallel rectangles each having a positive integral demand. The rectangles are placed arbitrarily in the grid with the only assumption that each rectangle is intersected by at least one column and at least one row. The objective is...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms for Capacitated Rectangle Stabbing
In the rectangle stabbing problem we are given a set of axis parallel rectangles and a set of horizontal and vertical lines, and our goal is to find a minimum size subset of lines that intersect all the rectangles. In this paper we study the capacitated version of this problem in which the input includes an integral capacity for each line. The capacity of a line bounds the number of rectangles ...
متن کاملCounterexample for the 2-approximation of finding partitions of rectilinear polygons with minimum stabbing number
This paper presents a counterexample for the approximation algorithm proposed by Durocher and Mehrabi [1] for the general problem of finding a rectangular partition of a rectilinear polygon with minimum stabbing number.
متن کاملErratum to: Computing Partitions of Rectilinear Polygons with Minimum Stabbing Number
In this note, we report an error in our paper “Computing Partitions of Rectilinear Polygons with Minimum Stabbing Number” [2]. Given an orthogonal polygon P and a partition of P into rectangles, the stabbing number of the partition is defined as the maximum number of rectangles stabbed by any orthogonal line segment inside P . Abam et al. [1] introduced the problem of finding a partition of P i...
